Good for you, Lyle. Listen to your mind, heart and body and you will come to know what is best for you. When you do what is best for you it will be good for others. I support you on your new adventure. I look forward to your post whenever it comes.
Posts ready to go three months in advance?!? I would have done a Danny Thomas spit take as well. 😱
Good on you for slowing the treadmill down, Lyle! I can’t conceive of pumping out thousands of words every week, and bravo to everyone who does. Keeping to a cadence that works for me means carving out time for deep thinking, lots of editing, and a creating sense of playfulness with the words I create — and I know that wouldn’t be possible for me if I published weekly.
So excited to read what you share, whenever you choose to share it!
I can relate. 'You do you' is the mantra I am trying to establish for myself as I also try to figure out what suits me when it comes to writing style and regularity. I like the idea of publishing at a specific time. I think I'll steal that. We'll be here when you get back 🙂
Find your groove... I've been doing this for almost a year now. I started thinking that a post once a month would be okay. I felt it was not enough to keep a steady readership going (I'm nowhere near your numbers, Lyle!). Once a week was a rhythm I knew I could not sustain. I'm working on short stories, have a book coming out next year, a WIP, and editing... so, a lot of fiction writing. I landed on "every other Thursday" (because I've always loved Thursdays!) and I've stuck to it in good and bad weather, through travels and appointments, no matter what. Sometimes I finished the piece "the day of", sometimes it was ready 3 days ahead of time (rare, lol). Switching from pure fiction has done me a ton of good, so I'll keep at it. We'll see how it goes. No matter what you decide, I'll keep reading you!
Cheerleading you on whatever comes next in your writing Lyle! I’m also committed to publish on a certain date (once a month the 29) and the urge for cadence and rhythm when writing really becomes tangible in my habits. You are way beyond that stage! So kiddos for the space you are creating for your next creative adventure!
Congratulations on making what I know is a hard decision. I continue to grapple with it myself. Eager to see how this enhances what you can produce and share. Also hopeful that it will positively impact your ability to juggle the other important priorities in your life.
Alicia teases me about my eagerness for your posts on Saturdays, it’s such a true gift you’ve been giving all of us - and it’s even more of a gift for us to know you’re taking care of yourself and giving something to yourself that you need. Your thoughtful, perceptive writing is cherished no matter when or how often it comes.
Thanks for another Lyle-style dose of candidness and vulnerability! I really get you, man.
Just want to let you know that the 8:08 thing is really awesome connection: something about picking a random time and sticking with it really gives the impression that you're serious about what you're doing. (But then again, maybe it isn't random?)
The 8:08 time is a reference to the 808 kick drum sound that originated in hip hop and is now used in a lot of popular songs these days. But yeah, I saw you can schedule post down to the minute on Substack and that number immediately popped in my head for some reason, so it’s a bit random
I am also the writer who scrambles before deadline and all that. I have thinking about not being a deadline fighter. But I keep delaying it for no reason.
Working on a fiction draft and job-hunting at the same time just push the newsletter to kind of a back-burner.
Maybe doing something to trick me into getting them done early would do? We'll see :)
Maybe you could do that. But also, a job hunt is quite important, so maybe you can honor that and be more forgiving with yourself about delaying your writing.
Good on you man, excited to see what comes :)

Good decision. Most readers just want to read thoughtful writing. A fixed frequency is hardly necessary. Best of luck for this new endeavor.

When I started this, I published on Thursdays too!
Great minds!
I am doing it for every other Thursday too. I figured I don't have that much to say for the weekly post. Also working on my first ever fiction here!
Congrats on giving yourself space to make the change Lyle. I’m stoked to read whatever creative projects your brain brings about.

Staying true to what feels right. 🙌

well that does it I'm unsubscribing I demand every Saturday OR NOTHING
Laughed at your comment, then went to your page, and the description “comedian” leapt out at me 😂 Thanks for laughs 😍
Oh yeah, Alex is one of the funniest writers on Substack. But also super vulnerable, real, and raw

Turn it up!!! 808 sound is always banging
Supporting whatever your creative brain is needed for!! 🙌
Go for it. I’ll be here when you post again.

Yes, it is. Regardless, looking forward to your future posts!
Yes I love it. Screw the algorithms. Sounds like you have discipline covered. Now just follow the muse.
