Most creative writing advice is designed to make the writer more generic, more “commercial”, or more like the one giving advice. I ignore it all. And I am not famous to prove it. 😉
“they'll give you a list of words to cut from your writing. words such as "just" "that" "very" "like" "pretty" "so" and almost anything that ends in "ly".“
In my mind, as a singularly uncreative writer, but a whiz at memos and emails to my local elected officials (democracy, People!), it’s more about varying your word choices. We all have some word we use far too often (my word is Just, as in only, not justice), and that is boring for the reader. Just, very, only, aren’t always the most precise words for what we’re trying to convey, as well, so broaden that active vocabulary!
the problem with creative writing
Not a believer in removing certain words from your vocabulary, but I am a big believer in removing words, without mercy, from one draft to the next.
