I'm almost always in the "get the dog" camp, but a 500 sq ft apartment is pretty small for a dog. If Disinclined is cool with lots of walks with a dog, then go for it but if they are adamantly not interested in being doggie day care, getting a dog = the end of that relationship. (Though if the wife really wants one then not getting one could also = the end of the relationship.) I think you're right that this is similar to having a kid. I mean, I don't think I could be in a relationship with someone who didn't like and want pets. I'd go as far as to say, I would choose my cats and dog over a relationship any time.
